Step-by-Step Guide to Registering as a MEI in Brazil

Registering as a Microempreendedor Individual (MEI) is a great way to formalize your business and gain access to tax benefits. The best part? The process is free and fully online. In this article, we’ll walk you through each step to help you register your MEI successfully.

1. Check If You Qualify for MEI

Before registering, make sure you meet these requirements:

Annual revenue must not exceed BRL 81,000
You cannot be an owner, partner, or administrator of another company
Your business activity must be on the official MEI list (Check the list here)
You can only hire one employee

If you meet these criteria, you can move forward with registration.

2. Gather Required Documents

You’ll need the following information:

  • CPF (Cadastro de Pessoa Física)
  • RG (Identity Document)
  • Address (Residential and Business Location)
  • Voter Registration Number (Título de Eleitor) or last Income Tax Return
  • Email Address and Phone Number

3. Access the Official MEI Portal

Visit the official Portal do Empreendedor (gov.br/mei) and click on “Quero ser MEI”.

Then, log in using your gov.br account. If you don’t have one, you can create it instantly.

4. Fill Out the Registration Form

  • Enter your personal information (Name, CPF, Birth Date, etc.)
  • Choose your business category (CNAE Code)
  • Provide your business location (Home-based or Commercial)

Once completed, the system will generate your CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica) immediately.

5. Obtain Your MEI Registration Certificate

After submitting your form, you will receive:

CNPJ Number
MEI Registration Certificate (CCMEI)

You can download your certificate from the MEI Portal anytime.

6. Start Paying Your Monthly Taxes (DAS)

As a MEI, you must pay a fixed monthly tax (DAS), which ranges from BRL 67 to 72. You can:

  • Download the DAS directly from the MEI Portal
  • Set up automatic bank payments to avoid late fees

7. Issue Invoices (Notas Fiscais)

To work with companies, you may need to issue Notas Fiscais (Invoices). Check with your municipal or state tax office for requirements.

Conclusion

Registering as a MEI is quick, free, and easy, giving you tax benefits and legal protection. By following these steps, you can formalize your business and start operating legally today!
